Different Styles of Yoga, and Choosing the One That's Right for You.
Generally speaking, there is not so much emphasis on the different “styles” or “brands” of yoga. All of them are simply referred to as “Hatha Yoga.” However, there are some quite significant differences between the many modern styles of yoga that are popular today, and it’s important to choose the one that’s right for you. Equally important, however, is the importance of keeping an open mind towards other styles and trying something different from time to time. Here’s a basic breakdown of the styles of yoga offered at Karma…
Hatha is simply the term for any kind of yoga that involves doing asana, or yoga poses. It is the umbrella under which all other “brands” of yoga fall. However, more recently, Hatha Yoga has come to represent the more “traditional” styles of Indian yoga, and styles that are more soft and relaxing, as opposed to the more physically challenging styles like Astanga and Bikram Yoga. Yet this is essentially a misunderstanding, as Hatha Yoga can in fact include poses and sequences that are just as, if not more challenging than any other kind of yoga.
